Work Smarter By Streamlining Your Desk

According to a survey conducted by OfficeTeam, 83% of human resource managers said the appearance of a person’s workspace can leave a nasty impression on your professionalism. A messy desk can hurt your reputation at work.

Having a cluttered workspace is “a tremendous waste of productivity,” says Katherine Trezise, president of the Institute for Challenging Disorganization.

Just as you do with spring cleaning, give your desk a seasonal makeover. Treat your desk like your home. If you haven’t touched something in six months, it may be time to get rid of it (or at least stash it in your filing cabinet.)

Ditch the Paper

We all know how important it is to go paperless. While it’s very rare for an office to have no paper, there are ways to cut back on its usage and become a master of organization.

Start by eliminating some of those sticky notes plastered all over your computer and bulletin board. Post-its are really useful in many situations, but only if used correctly — or when you’re pranking someone’s car. Some iOS apps like Clear are great for keeping your to-do list digital.

Going digital not only makes for a cleaner workspace, but it allows you to keep tabs on your assignments wherever you go. Programs like Evernote are perfect for note-taking and sharing your work with others with one simple click.

Clean Your Inbox

Digital clutter is another issue in itself. How many emails are in your inbox(es) right now? These messages can be overwhelming. Unsubscribe to the emails you’re no longer interested in and categorize the others into folders you can easily find another time.

Organize Chaos

Some people (and maybe you’re one of them) claim that “organized chaos” is required for them to function and continue producing great work. If it works for you, by all means, keep on keepin’ on.

The downside to this method of organization is that papers all over your desk eventually blend in with everything else. Trezise suggests you create some sort of system — like the aforementioned to-do lists or electronic reminders — and take a few minutes out of each day to clean your space. Because no one likes tangled power cords.

Creative solutions

Streamlining your workspace doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, with the help of some stylish modern organization tools — it may even be fun. Getting rid of useless items can be liberating, and here are some ways to organize what’s left.
