What Does Digital Printing Mean?

Print technology isn’t as glamorous as mobile phone and home entertainment technology, but it’s evolving just as rapidly. Most of us still remember the noisy black and white printers of the past and massive copy machines that seemed to break more often than not.

Our clients come to us in need of a total print technology makeover, and the solution is always digital printing. What does digital printing mean exactly?

In simple terms, digital printing means transferring a document from a personal computer or other digital storage device to a printer. Information is then digitized to facilitate storage and reproduction.

Don’t worry, it isn’t that complicated. What you need to know is that digital printing offers heightened efficiency in the workplace and unsurpassed print quality. Xerox is at the forefront of this technology, offering a tremendous range of products for every business size and need.

Digital printing replaces lithography — a method of printing based on the immiscibility of oil and water — at the consumer and business level. This is mostly due to its lower production costs. In short, it’s a more cost-effective alternative with amazing benefits like integration with paperless workflows.

Digital printing can handle any job

It’s time to ditch the idea that printing is meant for large, pre-determined runs. With digital printing, there’s no project too small. In fact, requests can be made for something as small as one print. Digital methods work at a faster rate to improve print quality and lower overall costs.

Digital printing is an innovative process

Unlike screen printing, digital print software offers a newer process. Your processed text or artwork is transferred directly from computer to  the surface of your choice. It’s not heat transfer or applique because the link is directly adhered to your product.

Digital printing is all about quality

Digital printing typically works best for small-quantity items requiring high levels of detail. A Xerox digital printer doesn’t use a screen which allows for a photographic print containing more detail than the traditional screen printing.

Digital printing is cost effective

While digital printing may cost more per page versus traditional printing methods, this price is typically counterbalanced because you’ll avoid the cost of technical steps needed in order to make printing plates. You’ll be able to access on-demand printing, short turnaround times and even modify the image used for each impression.

Saving money on labor means digital printing is reaching the point where it can match or surpass offset printing technology's ability to produce larger print runs of several thousand sheets at a low price.
